A long-distance advent calendar
24 doors that work across the miles: a call, a real letter, a shared playlist, the same film at the same time. Sent as a link β and no door opens before its day.
Start with this templateWhat door 1 sounds like
There are miles between us, but the same sky is above us both. π
Tonight, once it's dark where you are, we both step to a window and look out. Whoever sends a photo of it first gets to choose the topic of our next call.
The 24 doors
1 Same sky
There are miles between us, but the same sky is above us both. π
Tonight, once it's dark where you are, we both step to a window and look out. Whoever sends a photo of it first gets to choose the topic of our next call.
2 Our playlist
From today we're building a December playlist together. πΆ
You create it, I add the first song β and then one of us adds a new one every day. By Christmas Eve we'll have the soundtrack to this winter.
3 A real letter
Today I'm writing you something you can hold. βοΈ
Your task: write me a letter too, by hand, on paper. It doesn't have to be long. It doesn't matter when it arrives β looking forward to it counts double.
4 Voice, not text
No messages today. Call me whenever it suits you. π
And if you can't right now: send me a voice note telling me what you saw today.
5 Breakfast together
Tomorrow we have breakfast together β each at our own table, both on a video call. β
Same time, same drink if we can manage it. Whoever turns their camera on first gets to tell the other how they slept.
6 St Nicholas from afar
Happy St Nicholas' Day! π
I can't fill a boot for you today, so we'll fill it another way: tell me three small things that made you happy today. I'll send you my three back.
7 The same film
It's movie night. πΏ
We pick a film, press play on three at the same moment and text each other while it runs. Popcorn on both sides is mandatory.
8 Show me your way
I want to know what your days look like. πΆ
Take me along today: a photo of your way to work, to class or to the shop β the bit of the world I can't see right now.
9 Countdown
Do you know how many days are left until we see each other again? I do. π
Write the number somewhere you'll see it every day β on a note on the mirror, as your phone wallpaper, on the fridge.
10 Same recipe
Today we cook together, just not in the same kitchen. π²
We pick a recipe, buy the same ingredients and cook on a video call. Afterwards we compare whose version looks better. Be honest!
11 Three questions
Today I'm asking you three questions I've never asked before:
β’ What did you want to be as a child?
β’ Which smell reminds you of home?
β’ What are you most grateful for this year?Answer whenever you like β and then it's my turn.
12 A piece of you
Send me something today that smells, sounds or looks like you β a photo of your favourite jumper, the song playing where you are, the view from your window. πͺ
It makes the distance feel a little smaller.
13 Falling asleep together
Tonight we fall asleep at the same time. π
We stay on the phone until one of us is too tired to talk β and we don't hang up before we've said good night.
14 Post is on its way
Today is a good day for a parcel. π¦
Pack something small that belongs to you: a bag of your favourite tea, a photo, a note with one sentence. I'll do the same. Whoever gets their post first calls the other.
15 Our place
Tell me today about the place we'll go first when we see each other again. πΊοΈ
I'll tell you mine. Let's see if we have the same one in mind.
16 Halfway
Halfway through December! And a few days closer to seeing each other. π
Today you get one compliment from me for every hour we're both awake. Expect a lot of messages.
17 Game night
Tonight we play. π²
An online game, a word game on the phone or battleships on squared paper β as long as we laugh. Whoever loses sings a Christmas song.
18 What I miss
Today I'm telling you what I miss most about you when you're not here. π
Your task: do the same. One sentence is enough β but it has to be honest.
19 The same walk
Today we go for a walk at the same time, each in our own town. π§£
Headphones in, call on, and we tell each other what we see. At the end we send each other a photo of the nicest thing along the way.
20 Plans for next year
Today we dream ahead a little. βοΈ
Tell me three things you want to do with me next year β one small, one big and one a bit mad.
21 Longest night
Today is the longest night of the year. π―οΈ
We both light a candle at the same time and tell each other what was good this year. From tomorrow the days get longer again β and the wait until we meet gets shorter.
22 Our playlist, finished
Remember our playlist? π§
Today we listen to it from start to finish for the first time, at the same time. If a song makes you think of a particular moment, tell me.
23 Almost Christmas
Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, and we're not in the same place. π
So here's a promise for today: however busy tomorrow gets, we make time for each other, even if it's only a few minutes on the phone.
24 Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! π
For 24 days I've been with you a little every day, even from far away. Call me today when things get quieter β I want to hear your voice before the day is over.
And next year, I hope, we celebrate in the same room.
Free, no sign-up. You can change every door afterwards.
